What does it mean to be a part of a community like Evergreen?
In an effort to answer the question of what we mean when we say we’re “in” at Evergreen, we came up with 6 “core commitments.” These are what we ask people to look at, be aware of and commit to when deciding to become a part of our church community.
The first one is: On Life in the Way of Jesus
Evergreen is a distinctly Christian community, and though one does not need to be committed to Christ to participate in it, this community as a whole is committed to seeking God through the person of Jesus. For those who are following Jesus, this means commitment to living life in the way of Jesus, and to introducing others whenever possible through word and deed to the person of Jesus. We commit to time spent listening to God individually and as a community and to living out life in the way of Jesus for the glory of God, and the good of the city of Portland.
What does this mean?
Evergreen is a community made up of people at many different places on the spiritual continuum from those with questions and doubts to those who are committed followers of Jesus. And though we as a community are at many different places, at the center is Jesus. The whole purpose of Evergreen is to help one another discover who Jesus is and what it means to follow Him. For this reason we ask people who are “in” at Evergreen to commit to living as disciples of Jesus, followers trying live life in His way.
Further, we commit to living the kind of invitational life that introduces others to Jesus. To do these things, we know we need to spend significant time listening to God- we do this through spending time in prayer, reading Scripture, listening together in community on Sundays and in our home communities and in other ways. We invite even those who don’t yet know if they want to follow Jesus to engage in these disciplines, because we believe that doing so is the best way to get to know who Jesus is.
