Baptisms are something we as members of the Christian community have been doing for more than 2000 years. Someone stands before the community and the world and says “I’m all in. I’m following Jesus no matter what.”
And their whole body goes under the water, and comes back up- not a slight change in life, not tinkering with details or adding a practice here and there- a death, a burial and a resurrection. A picture of identifying with Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection.
The Apostle Paul tells us in Romans 6 “all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. We were therefore buried with him into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.“
This Sunday, not only are we seeing two people make a commitment to following Jesus, but we’re also as a community committing to them- to love them, teach them, and help them follow Jesus.
Before the baptism, you as a community will be asked if you will commit to love, pray for, teach, correct and encourage each of those we are baptizing as a community as they try, with God’s help, to live for Christ.
Spend some time thinking about that this week, and come ready on Sunday to answer with a loud and hearty “YES!”
