In an effort to answer the question of what we mean when we say we’re “in” at Evergreen, we came up with 6 “core commitments.” These are what we ask people to look at, be aware of and commit to when deciding to become a part of our church community.
The third one is: on Giving Yourself–
Evergreen is committed to organic, non-programmatic ministry. All that to say, if you don’t do it, no one else will. Being a part of evergreen means making significant contributions to who we are becoming as a community. We commit to giving our time and our skills and passions as well as our financial support to this community. We commit to praying for Evergreen, for its continued health and service to God and to Portland. We commit to missional living in the city of Portland, serving others for the good of the city and for the sake of others knowing and esteeming the person of Jesus.
What does this mean?
Simply put, this means the work of the community rests on you. Most all of what we do is driven by the people of Evergreen and their choice to contribute to the work of the community. While we have multiple staff members, all but one are part time. As a community, we depend on the each other to to drive ministry. It’s up to you and what you are passionate about to determine what justice ministries we are involved in. It’s up to you to make sure we have enough folks volunteering to love and teach our kids. It’s up to you to make sure we make the budget commitments we set. It’s up to you!
Because of this, we as community commit to praying for one another and the community as a whole, to giving our time and money and passions/talents. But most importantly, we commit together to living the kind of Jesus-like, mission-oriented lives among our neighbors and co-workers that make Evergreen the “missional” community we dream of it being.
It’s up to you.
